Navy 9: Plastics are never allowed to be discharged overboard when underway. The plastics are shredded and melted into a disc the size of a manhole cover with a depth of 7-8 inches. All plastics materials are compressed in this device (including candy wrappers and non-numbered plastics). They are more compact this way and can be stored until the ship reaches a proper facility for recycling. Any violation means a $25,000 fine to the captain, especially in the presence of wildlife (considered a red zone). Sailor LSSN Dustin Rogers describes the plastics compressor process.
