Research Wind Turbine: A 25 kw wind turbine has been installed at the University's Wind Tunnel Facility, and another is soon to follow. The turbines will help power the facility, but their primary purpose is to support cutting-edge research in the Laboratory for Enhanced Wind Energy Design. The researchers aim to demonstrate that through the development of advanced rotors featuring a Notre Dame-patented plasma flow control technology, they can increase power generation and extend the life span of wind turbine systems while reducing their weight and decreasing their cost. The first turbine has been modified with the plasma actuators and the second turbine will serve as a baseline. The laboratory's meteorological tower provides for continuous documentation of wind conditions.
