Vertical Axis Wind Turbine: The vertical axis wind turbine located atop the campus power plant represents the university's first foray into wind energy. Because of its relatively small size and low cost, this vertical axis turbine can serve as a test case for community members considering a personal investment in wind power generation. The performance of the vertical axis system is compared on an ongoing basis to that of the more recently installed horizontal axis turbine located at the Wind Tunnel Facility north of campus, providing additional educational and research opportunities for students and faculty. The power plant that houses the vertical axis turbine is a high-efficiency cogeneration facility that utilizes the same fuel to supply the campus with electricity, chilled water for cooling, and steam for heating and hot water.
