But with the decision to draft African-American QB Doug Williams with their 17th pick in 1978, that was all about to change. From 1979-1982, Williams would lead his team to the playoffs three times. Despite his success, Williams' salary was low. Every starting QB in the NFL made more than him, as well as 12 backups. Because of this, Williams bounced to the USFL and later to the Redskins in 1986. With the Skins, he became the first black QB to play in and win a Super Bowl. In that Super Bowl, he threw for four TDs, and 340 yards and blew out the Broncos, 42-10.
