NEW YORK (Ticker) -- The defending Eastern Conference champion
New York Liberty try for their first victory of the season in
their home opener on Saturday afternoon against the Indiana
Fever. New York dropped its season opener at Miami on Thursday, 68-59. Vickie Johnson scored 20 points and Tari Phillips added 11 for the Liberty, who also shot 44 percent (22-of-50) but committed 20 turnovers. The Liberty trailed by as many as 13 points in the first half but rallied to get within five points on a basket by Phillips with just under 13 minutes left. But the Sol took command with a 9-2 spurt and New York never made a serious push the rest of the way. All-Star guard Teresa Weatherspoon made just 2-of-6 shots for only four points. Indiana dropped its home opener on Thursday to Houston, 82-78. Rita Williams scored 15 points and Danielle McCulley contributed 12 for the Fever, which had five players scored in double figures and made 18-of-19 free throws. Rookie Niele Ivey, who played on Notre Dame's national championship team, collected seven points and five assists in her debut. Indiana first-year coach Nell Fortner is seeking her first professional coaching victory. New York has won all three meetings with Indiana, including the lone meeting at Madison Square Garden last season, 72-70, on June 30.
