Composting and Biodiesel: W.A. Callegari Environmental Center is the LSU AgCenter's research and training facility for composting organic waste and for water and air quality research. The center produces biodiesel by recycling and converting used vegetable oil from campus dining halls. This biodiesel mix is used in all campus landscaping equipment, which lowers emissions significantly.
Fall Fest, LSU's annual welcome back celebration for students has taken an eco-friendly turn. This event, a university tradition for more than 15 years, now features composting and recycling to minimize the amount of waste produced by the event. Combined recycling and composting efforts through the Callegari Center have resulted in diversion rates as high as 78%. Recently, composting efforts have expanded to include 60 cubic yards per month of pine shavings from the barns at Vet Med.
