CGD Eco Challenge
Cogeneration Unit: LSU was able to decrease its use of purchased power in FY2005 when it brought online its second cogeneration facility. The system is composed of a turbine engine fueled by natural gas that produces both electricity and steam in a combined heat-and-power process. The gas-turbine generator runs 24 hours a day and can produce up to 20 megawatts of electricity and 150,000 pounds per hour of steam. This plant is capable of providing a substantial portion of the cooling and all of the heating requirements necessary for LSU's academic departments, research facilities, campus housing, and sporting events. It provides 60% of the overall electricity consumption on campus. LSU has also implemented temperature setbacks, steam system improvements, building automation, utility metering, and energy efficient lighting to reduce energy usage and costs.
