The Tide had to win to return to the SEC championship game and sprang to an early 17-point lead before Auburn scored the next 23. With just minutes left, quarterback Freddie Kitchens took the Tide down the field before throwing a 6-yard touchdown pass to Dennis Riddle with 26 seconds left. An extra point sealed the 24-23 win, and coach Gene Stallings announced he would retire after the bowl game.
