Herschel Walker runs over Bill Bates for first touchdownSept. 6, 1980: In Georgia's 1980 opener at Tennessee, Bulldogs freshman tailback Herschel Walker took over the game in the second half. With the Volunteers holding a 15-2 lead, Walker took the ball on a toss sweep and ran over Volunteers defender Bill Bates at the 5-yard line before scoring his first touchdown. Walker added another touchdown minutes later, giving UGA a 16-15 victory. Georgia finished 12-0 and won the 1980 national championship.
