Most of us think of Miles as a college coach, but he also spent three seasons as the tight ends coach with the Dallas Cowboys. It was during that pro stint that Miles saw a different side of Cowboys owner Jerry Jones.
Miles' father, Hope Cecil Miles -- also known as "H.C." or "Bubba" -- died during the 2000 season, on a week when Dallas was preparing to face the rival Washington Redskins on "Monday Night Football." Not only did Jones and head coach Dave Campo allow Miles to leave the team to tend to his family, but Jones allowed Miles to use his personal plane.
"I left the team on Friday night after practice and rejoined them on Sunday, and Mr. Jones arranged his personal air travel on his plane," Miles recalled. "And I can just tell you never in my life have I been treated so kindly by a group of people."
The Cowboys presented Miles with a game ball after their 27-21 victory and it still serves as a sentimental reminder of Jones' treatment of Miles' family at such a trying time.
"I'm glad we won that game," Miles said. "It was an important time. My father saw me coach with the Dallas Cowboys, the last time he saw me coach."
