Just outside Miles' second-floor office is a covered porch that overlooks the Tigers' practice facility. At one point, that porch -- or more specifically, the inhabitants of the porch -- was the source of endless headaches for LSU's coach.
A group of birds had nested in the overhang directly above Miles' office, and the racket they created was nearly unbearable. LSU facilities workers installed netting along the roof in an attempt to keep the birds out, but it didn't do any good.
"I could not work in here. The fun that these birds were having back in that little area -- I'm talking about right there" Miles said, pointing to a now-empty nest above the porch, "it was the damndest party you ever heard. I'm not kidding you."
The turning point came when LSU installed an owl decoy along the patio railing. The decoy is so lifelike that it occasionally turns its head, and it apparently terrifies real birds because they haven't returned since the owl took up residence.
"I'm glad," he said. "Otherwise they'd still be having one hell of a party."
