Boxing's Heavyweight Championship Lineage

Shannon Briggs
1997-98
Briggs became the the third native of the Brownsville section of Brooklyn, N.Y. (after Mike Tyson and Riddick Bowe) to become heavyweight champion.
Briggs, however, secured the lineal championship under unique circumstances in 1997, with a majority decision victory over 48-year-old George Foreman. Not only was the decision controversial, the lineal title changed hands during a non-title bout due to Foreman being stripped of both of his alphabet titles in the three-year aftermath of his upset of Michael Moorer. Briggs would remain the champion for just four months before being knocked out by Lennox Lewis in 1998.
