Alabama head coach Nick Saban is not one to play phone pals with his coaching predecessors, but one of the people he made it a point to call before deciding to take the job at Alabama in 2007 was Gene Stallings.
"People don't know this, but the two people I talked to from Alabama about coming here, whether I should or shouldn't come here, were Ozzie Newsome and coach Stallings," Saban says.
Knowing what question is coming next, Saban is quick to clarify the timeline.
"All this happened after the Dolphins' season was over," he says. "Everybody thinks it was going on for six months. It wasn't going on for six weeks. But I can tell you that Coach Stallings has been a really good friend and supporter, and he's the one guy who understands what you're going through at this place.
"He's been here and won a championship here. He's as solid as a rock."
