On a shelf along an office window sits a reminder of Stoops' greatest athletic achievement away from football.
In 2012, Stoops teamed with former OU golfer Hunter Haas in the Pebble Beach National Pro-Am. They finished fourth, and Stoops also took home the Jack Lemmon Award as the low amateur after shooting an 82 on Saturday and an 80 on Sunday.
"I had five natural birdies," Stoops said. "I hadn't done that since maybe I was an assistant with [Steve] Spurrier. We used to play like that. But I haven't played like that in 16 years."
The final hole of the tournament underscored the weekend.
"I hit a great drive down the middle. I'm hitting my 3 into the wind, into the green. And I lose it right, goes down the beach. So I figure Hunter's in good shape, he's in the fairway, he'll make par for us."
Problem was, Haas' shot sailed even farther right.
"I'm like, 'Oh geez, he may not even find it.' So I say to my caddie, 'I'd better drop and hit in.'" Stoops next try was better, landing 10 yards off the green.
"I say to the caddie, 'Gimme my sand wedge. I'm going to chip this thing in and get the heck out of here.' Hunter is over still looking for his ball, I chip it up, and it rolls right in the hole. Hunter is over there like, 'Are you kidding me?'"
Stoops wouldn't keep a fourth-place football trophy. But a fourth-place golf trophy? He displays that proudly.
