Stoops has won one national championship, eight Big 12 titles and many other big games. In his office, he has game balls lined up on a shelf commemorating them. But of all the wins, Stoops has a favorite: the 31-14 victory over top-ranked Nebraska in 2000, which catapulted the Sooners all the way to the national title.
"That's where it really began," said Stoops, who was in his second season then. The previous two games, OU had stomped Texas and toppled No. 2 Kansas State on the road. But there were still doubts as to whether the Sooners were really back after several seasons of relative mediocrity. Those doubts evaporated after OU beat Nebraska.
"That's the last time the fans rushed the field here," Stoops said. "There were people honking their horns eight hours after the game. People had the idea that we had a chance again."
