The same town that produced Stoops also produced former world lightweight boxing champion Ray "Boom Boom" Mancini. Stoops and Mancini grew up together in Youngstown, Ohio, on the same block in the same neighborhood.
"His mom used to take us everywhere to get to basketball games," Stoops said. "After high school I left to go to Iowa. Boom, when he graduated, he took a bus to New York to start training."
Stoops and Mancini have remained close over the years, which is why Stoops keeps a framed autographed photo of the two on a wall in his office. Stoops said growing up in a hard-working place like Youngstown helped forge the success of the two later in life.
"There isn't anything fancy about it," Stoops said. "That's how everybody is. It's a blue-collar town. The way you work, the attitude. You better be that way, or you'll get worked over. That's the truth."
