Jim McMahon's long-distance connection completes rallyDec. 19, 1980: For 56 minutes, the Holiday Bowl between SMU and BYU was a one-sided affair. The Mustangs' Pony Express backfield ran wild for a 45-25 SMU lead. Then Jim McMahon and the Cougars erased it with 21 points in a frantic final four minutes. Aided by an onside kick and a blocked punt, BYU was down 45-39 with three seconds left when McMahon dropped back and chucked it deep. Tight end Clay Brown somehow beat a cluster of SMU defenders for the ball to tie the game, and the Cougars won on the extra point.
