On the front right corner of Richt's desk is a folded T-shirt with a cross lying on top of it. The T-shirt is there to honor James Eunice, a former Valdosta (Georgia) High School player who planned to walk on with the Bulldogs. The back of the T-shirt includes the words, "The Clock Is Ticking."
Eunice, a high school teammate of current UGA players Malcolm Mitchell and Jay Rome, drowned in a pond while duck hunting in Lake Park, Florida, in January 2011. He was 17 years old. Mitchell and Rome spoke at his funeral, and Richt sent a letter that was read aloud during the service. It read, "Oh yeah, James made the team."
Georgia honored Eunice by listing him as No. 23 on its roster and including him in its media guide until he would have graduated.
"To honor the kid, we sent a Georgia jersey to put in his casket," Richt said. "He was a really special young man."
