- His Favorite Coaches

Miles admires plenty of coaches, but he revered Bo Schembechler, his legendary head coach at Michigan who gave him his first college coaching job as a Wolverines graduate assistant in 1980. Miles served as Michigan's offensive line coach from 1987 to 1994, including the 1989 season that was Schembechler's final year as the Wolverines' coach. Miles keeps a framed picture of himself at age 36, Schembechler, offensive coordinator Gary Moeller and 28-year-old receivers coach Cam Cameron sitting together in a hotel suite the night before Bo's final game, the Jan. 1, 1990, Rose Bowl against USC.
The hay was in the barn by this point, as old coaches like to say, and everyone pictured is wearing a big grin while enjoying their final night together as a coaching staff. Miles particularly enjoys that Schembechler looks so content while staring in his direction in the photo.
"It was one of the real joys," Miles said. "He was more jovial, he was happy. I just want you to know, this picture right here is one of my favorites of all time because we were enjoying humor and Bo is in reference to me and I had a blast."
LSU fans know, of course, that Miles and Cameron were reunited when Cameron joined Miles' staff last season as offensive coordinator after spending many years as a head coach and assistant in the NFL. Two guys who once shared an office together as young coaches at Michigan seem to have turned out just fine.
"That was a great staff, great guys, great people," Miles said while staring at a list of Michigan's year-by-year results under Schembechler. "You talk about a lucky heritage with enjoyable history, the idea that I was part of, in any way, at Michigan with this, look at this guy's career. Whew."
