Miles' first full-time college coaching job was not at Michigan, but at Colorado, where he served as offensive line coach under former Wolverines assistant Bill McCartney.
Miles was a member of McCartney's first Colorado staff in 1982 and spent five seasons with the Buffaloes before going back to Michigan. He gained a tremendous amount of respect for McCartney while in Boulder and still keeps an autographed picture of his former boss in his office.
"Bill was a tremendous mentor and one of the most talented men I've ever known, and a really great committed Christian. He really led by example, his way. I'm so fortunate to have been with him. I went from Bo Schembechler to Bill McCartney. I don't know that it gets any better than that."
