There's a copy on the coffee table next to his desk. A handful of them are kept on the bookshelf just in case a visitor comes in who hasn't read the book. And there's a framed version of the cover also hanging in the back of the office.
During his year away from coaching, former quarterback and current ESPN analyst Todd Blackledge gave Meyer "Lead ... for God's Sake!" to read, perhaps figuring the reminders of why a coach does what he does beyond winning games might speak to him.
The message obviously clicked, and Meyer has since passed it on to dozens of friends and colleagues, and he contributed a foreword for author Todd Gongwer.
"It's about a successful high school coach. I wouldn't say he lost his way, but he coaches for players and developing people and all that," Meyer said. "Then you start winning, and winning, and winning, and you become somebody else, chasing victories.
"That's real significant. I read that the year I took off coaching. It's a life-changer."
