2014 NBA Playoffs: Indiana Pacers' path

Midseason Miscues

Despite having a league-best 35-10 record, Bird signs Andrew Bynum to a $1 million contract for the rest of the season. The deal is struck on Feb. 1 after a dinner in Indianapolis, less than a month after the Cleveland Cavaliers traded Bynum, who had been banished from the team, to the Chicago Bulls. Bynum was then waived by the Bulls in a financial move.

Bynum, who had severe knee problems, didn't even take a physical before securing the deal. Pacers players are lukewarm about the addition and defer questions about the acquisition to management. Three weeks later the team trades Danny Granger, the team's longest-tenured player, to the Philadelphia 76ers in a package for Evan Turner, another move that catches the players by surprise.

Bynum plays two games before re-injuring his knee and being ruled out for the season, and is eventually dismissed from the team during the playoffs.

Turner plays in 27 games. His scoring average drops from 17 points per game with the 76ers to 7.1 with the Pacers. After the Bynum signing, the Pacers go 21-16; after the Turner trade, their record is 15-13.
