MELBOURNE, Australia -- This rematch of the 2001 final has more drama than last year leading into the match because no one thought Jennifer Capriati could beat Martina Hingis.

This year, the question is can Capriati defend or will Hingis win her first Grand Slam in years after so many people have written her off. It's a fun, fun match.

It's a little bit of a surprise that this rematch even happened. When the draw came out, Hingis was on the same side as Serena and Venus Williams and Monica Seles. Hingis' record against that style of player is not good. But things worked out for her, and she ended up with a good draw through the semifinals.

She played a great semifinal match against Seles winning 4-6, 6-1, 6-4. She also stayed fairly positive during the match after losing the first set.

Hingis has to be feeling fantastic to be in her sixth consecutive Australian Open final. The key for her now is to keep up the good serving and scramble enough to keep up with Capriati. Hingis is going to have to come to the net because she cannot beat Capriati from the back of the court.

Capriati has gotten better with each match she's played in this tournament. She came back in the third set after dropping the second to Kim Clijsters in the semifinals.

Hingis fears Capriati a lot more than Clijsters -- not that Clijsters would have been an easy opponent -- but because it's a tougher assignment playing Capriati.

Capriati will need to do the same kind of damage on Hingis' serve that she did last year in the final, plus have a pretty good day serving. Her serve has been pretty good so far during the championship with only a couple of shaky days. It helps that Hingis doesn't apply a lot of pressure on serves.

Capriati is coming to the net and gets more comfortable doing that with each passing year. That enables her to end points faster then if she just stayed at the back of the court.
