Holding court with the country's best

By Beth Mowins
Special to ESPN.com

We've picked the top 10 teams and the preseason favorite for the Player of the Year award. So why not get started breaking down each team's game.

Here are the top five teams that bring it to the paint, and the top five squads that handle the ball better than anyone:

Svetlana Abrosimova
Svetlana Abrosimova averaged 16.6 points and 6.6 rebounds in '99.

Five best backcourts
North Carolina: Nikki Teasley, Juana Brown and wing LaQuanda Barksdale are explosive in transition and dynamite in applying defensive pressure.

Rutgers: Tasha Pointer runs the point as well as anyone in the country, and Shawnetta Stewart compliments at the two spot. Quickness sets them apart.

Tennessee: Ace Clement has big shoes to fill at the point, but she had a great summer and she'll have plenty of help from defensive disrupter Semeka Randall.

Georgia: Coco and Kelly Miller both can shoot, score off the dribble, run the floor, make the pretty pass and handle the ball against pressure.

Iowa State: Stacy Frese is deceptively stong and mobile while Megan Taylor can wear down foes with her toughness. Both drain 3-pointers on a regular basis.

Five best frontcourts
UCLA: Senior Maylana Martin (6-3) is an All-America candidate with good mobility and touch. Janae Hubbard (6-4) and 6-foot Marie Philman score inside.

Connecticut: The Huskies have a lot of options and all are good. Can go big with 6-5 Paige Sauer and 6-6 Christine Rigby, or run with Tamika Williams, Swin Cash and Ashja Jones.

Illinois: Susan Blauser (6-2) can dominate and create foul problems for opponents on the low block. A healthy Cindy Dallas makes for a terrific tandem.

Marquette: Abbie Willenborg (6-2) and Lisa Oldenburg (6-2) bring experience and scoring to the low block, to the tune of about 30 points and 19 boards a game.

Wisconsin: LaTonya Sims (6-3) and Jessie Stomski (6-3) are joined by 6-4 Nina Smith, the national High School Player of the Year. Expect more bruises around the already black-and-blue Big Ten.
