We've picked the top 10 teams and the preseason favorite for the Player of the Year award. So why not get started breaking down each team's game. Here are the top five teams that bring it to the paint, and the top five squads that handle the ball better than anyone:
Five best backcourts Rutgers: Tasha Pointer runs the point as well as anyone in the country, and Shawnetta Stewart compliments at the two spot. Quickness sets them apart. Tennessee: Ace Clement has big shoes to fill at the point, but she had a great summer and she'll have plenty of help from defensive disrupter Semeka Randall. Georgia: Coco and Kelly Miller both can shoot, score off the dribble, run the floor, make the pretty pass and handle the ball against pressure. Iowa State: Stacy Frese is deceptively stong and mobile while Megan Taylor can wear down foes with her toughness. Both drain 3-pointers on a regular basis.
Five best frontcourts Connecticut: The Huskies have a lot of options and all are good. Can go big with 6-5 Paige Sauer and 6-6 Christine Rigby, or run with Tamika Williams, Swin Cash and Ashja Jones. Illinois: Susan Blauser (6-2) can dominate and create foul problems for opponents on the low block. A healthy Cindy Dallas makes for a terrific tandem. Marquette: Abbie Willenborg (6-2) and Lisa Oldenburg (6-2) bring experience and scoring to the low block, to the tune of about 30 points and 19 boards a game. Wisconsin: LaTonya Sims (6-3) and Jessie Stomski (6-3) are joined by 6-4 Nina Smith, the national High School Player of the Year. Expect more bruises around the already black-and-blue Big Ten. |
