UConn Huskies tabbed top dog

Basketball News

The last season of the century will be one of the most wide-open in a while, with quite a few teams capable of taking the title in 2000. That's quite a difference from the past couple of seasons, when Tennessee was all but crowned champ before the opening-game tipoff.

But when it's all said and done this season, we see Connecticut taking home the hardware behind All-American Svetlana Abrosimova and coach Geno Auriemma.

Here's Basketball News' look at the Top 64 teams to beat on the road to the City of Brotherly Love:

1. Connecticut Huskies
1998-99 record: 29-5.
Key players: F Svetlana Abrosimova, jr., 6-1; G Shea Ralph, jr., 6-0; F Tamika Williams, so., 6-2; C Paige Sauer, sr., 6-5; G Keirsten Walters, so., 5-8; G Sue Bird, so., 5-9.
The skinny: Coach Geno Auriemma has plenty of talent to mold into the first national champion of the 21st century. Along with All-America forward Svetlana Abrosimova (16.6 ppg, 6.6 rpg), the Huskies return junior Shea Ralph (16.8 ppg) and last year's Big East Rookie of the Year, Tamika Williams. Though it won't be easy getting through the stacked Big East, the experience should toughen up the Huskies for a long Tournament run.

2. Georgia Lady Bulldogs
1998-99 record: 27-7.
Key players: G Kelly Miller, jr., 5-10; G Coco Miller, jr., 5-10; F-C Shala Crawford, jr., 6-4 (Coffeyville Community College, Kansas).
The skinny: Junior twins Kelly and Coco Miller are back for another run at the Final Four. The Millers each averaged better than 18 points a game last season. They'll be joined by five other returning letterwinners, including sophomore center Tawana McDonald, as the Lady Bulldogs go for a 17th NCAA Tournament appearance.

3. UCLA Bruins
1998-99 record: 26-8.
Key players: F Maylana Martin, sr., 6-3; C Janae Hubbard, sr., 6-4; G Erica Gomez, sr., 5-9; G Nicole Kaczmarski, fr., 5-11.
The skinny: All five starters, including Pac-10 Player of the Year Maylana Martin, return, and now the Bruins add highly-touted recruit Nicole Kaczmarski to the mix. Martin and fellow seniors Janae Hubbard and Erica Gomez are hoping to end their storied careers in Philadelphia at the Final Four.

4. Rutgers Scarlet Knights
1998-99 record: 29-6.
Key players: G Tasha Pointer, jr., 5-6; G Shawnetta Stewart, sr., 5-10; C Tammy Sutton-Brown, jr., 6-4.
The skinny: Coach Vivian Stringer returns four starters from last season's 29-6 squad, including guards Tasha Pointer and Shawnetta Stewart, both All-Big East first-team selections a year ago. With a year of experience under their belt, the Scarlet Knights could improve on last year's Elite Eight appearance.

5. Tennessee Lady Vols
1998-99 record: 31-3.
Key players: F Tamika Catchings, jr., 6-1; G Semeka Randall, jr., 5-10; G Kristen Clement, jr., 5-11; G-F Kyra Elzy, jr., 6-1; C Michelle Snow, so., 6-5; F-C Gwen Jackson, fr., 6-2.
The skinny: What's this? The Lady Vols at No. 5? It's true, the seemingly unstoppable machine was shown to be human last year, and now the Vols are without Chamique Holdsclaw. But all is not lost. Semeka Randall and Basketball News preseason Player of the Year Tamika Catchings will lead a balanced attack that will have Tennessee in the hunt until the end.

6. Louisiana Tech Lady Techsters
1998-99 record: 30-3.
Key players: G Tamicha Jackson, sr., 5-5; C Shaka Massey, sr., 6-3; G Betty Lennox, sr., 5-8.
The skinny: Plenty of talent returns from last year's national semifinalist, led by senior guard Tamicha Jackson, sophomore center Ayana Walker and freshman forward Catrina Frierson. If the Lady Techsters' five freshmen can come through, a third straight Final Four appearance isn't out of the question.

7. Iowa State Cyclones
1998-99 record: 25-8.
Key players: G Stacy Frese, sr., 5-8; G Megan Taylor, jr., 5-10; C Angie Welle, so., 6-4.
The skinny: The Big 12 is now Cyclone country. Coming off a third straight NCAA Tournament appearance, Iowa State, the NCAA's top 3-point shooting team, has a couple of bona fide stars in Stacy Frese and Megan Taylor, and should be in the national-title hunt all year long.

8. Notre Dame Fighting Irish
1998-99 record: 26-5.
Key players: C Ruth Riley, jr., 6-5; G Niele Ivey, sr., 5-8.
The skinny: With senior guard Niele Ivey back from a knee injury suffered in the Big East tourney, and junior center Ruth Riley (16.6 ppg, 8.4 rpg, 101 blocks) patrolling the middle, the Irish should easily head to the Big Dance for the fifth straight season.

9. Penn State Lady Lions
1998-99 record: 22-8.
Key players: G Helen Darling, sr., 5-7; C Andrea Garner, sr., 6-3.
The skinny: The top five scorers are back from the Lady Lions' 22-8 squad of a year ago, including leading scorer Andrea Garner (14.4 ppg). While Garner is tough inside, guards Helen Darling and Lisa Shepherd lead a perimeter attack that hit almost 40 percent of its 3-pointers.

10. Purdue Boilermakers
1998-99 record: 34-1.
Key players: G-F Katie Douglas, jr., 6-1; C Camille Cooper, jr., 6-4; F Michelle Duhart, sr., 6-0.
The skinny: Without Ukari Figgs, Stephanie White-McCarty and coach Carolyn Peck, the Boilermakers will have a tough time defending their national title. But new coach Kristy Curry does have junior guard Katie Douglas (14.1 ppg) to build around, meaning Purdue shouldn't be taken lightly.

11. Duke Blue Devils
1998-99 record: 29-7.
Key players: G-F Peppi Browne, sr., 5-11; G Georgia Schweitzer, jr., 6-0; F Lauren Rice, sr., 6-1.
The skinny: This is a different team than the one that reached the national final a year ago. Gone are Michele VanGorp, Nicole Erickson and Hilary Howard. But the Blue Devils do return a talented cast, including forward Peppi Browne (8.7 ppg, 6.3 rpg), who will need to be more of an offensive force this season.

12. Virginia Tech Hokies
1998-99 record: 28-3.
Key players: F Tere Williams, jr., 5-11; G Amy Wetzel, jr, 5-7.
The skinny: What can the Hokies do to follow up a school-best 28-3 record? Three starters are back, including guard Amy Wetzel (14.4 ppg) and center Tere Williams (15.6 ppg). Nothing would be nicer than for Tech to finish its final Atlantic 10 campaign with a championship.

13. Clemson Tigers
1998-99 record: 26-6.
Key players: F-C Erin Batth, jr., 6-4.
The skinny: Junior Erin Batth returns from a knee injury that cost her most of the 1998-99 season, but she won't have a whole lot of support -- four starters have departed from last year's 26-win squad. Batth will need to carry quite a load for the Tigers to reach that mark again.

14. Oregon Ducks
1998-99 record: 25-6.
Key players: G Shaquala Willims, so., 5-6; C Jenny Mowe, jr., 6-5.
The skinny: If UCLA falters in the Pac-10, it may find itself passed by Oregon. The Ducks have a nice mix of young and veteran talent and play some of the best defense in the country, holding opponents to just 59.2 ppg last season.

15. UC Santa Barbara Gauchos
1998-99 record: 26-4.
Key players: G Erin Buescher, jr., 6-3; F-C Nicole Greathouse, jr., 6-2; G Stacy Clinesmith, sr., 5-5.
The skinny: There's plenty of offensive firepower for the Gauchos, who averaged 85 points a game last year and hit nearly 38 percent of their 3-point shots. Big West Player of the Year Erin Buescher (19.9 ppg) leads the way for the high-powered UCSB attack.

16. Auburn Tigers
1998-99 record: 20-9.
Key players: C Conswella Sparrow, sr., 6-2, G Tasha Hamilton, jr., 5-10; F Shera Looney, sr., 6-2.
The skinny: One of the more balanced teams around, the Tigers have only two players who averaged in double figures in scoring -- Conswella Sparrow and Tasha Hamilton -- yet still managed to put together a 20-9 record. Auburn is especially tough on the boards: It outrebounded its opponents by a margin of almost 10 a game last season.

17. Boston College Eagles
1998-99 record: 22-8.
Key players: G Cal Bouchard, sr., 5-7; G Brianne Stepherson, so., 5-8; F Alissa Murphy, sr., 5-10.
The skinny: After getting their first taste of NCAA Tournament success last year, the Eagles are ready to go back for more. BC's backcourt is loaded, with senior Cal Bouchard returning from a knee injury to join sophomore Brianne Stepherson and senior Alissa Murphy.

18. North Carolina Tar Heels.
1998-99 record: 28-8.
Key players: G Nikki Teasley, jr., 6-0; G Juana Brown, jr., 5-11; F LaQuanda Barksdale, jr., 5-11.
The skinny: Junior guard Nikki Teasley will again lead the Tar Heels after pacing the team in scoring as a sophomore at 15.4 ppg. Teasley also led the Atlantic Coast Conference in assists and steals. She'll get support from junior LaQuanda Barksdale, who tallied 13.9 ppg in 1998-99.

19. Louisiana State Lady Tigers
1998-99 record: 22-8.
Key players: F Katrina Hibbert, sr., 5-11; C DeTrina White, so., 5-11; F April Brown, jr., 5-11.
The skinny: After setting a school record with 10 Southeastern Conference wins, the Lady Tigers are back to try to improve on that mark. With four starters back, LSU may do just that. Senior Katrina Hibbert, an Australian import, leads the offensive attack (team-best 14.5 ppg), which could use more size in the post.

20. Southwest Missouri State
1998-99 record: 25-7.
Key players: G Jackie Stiles, jr., 5-8.
The skinny: Although the Lady Bears have Jackie Stiles, the nation's second-leading scorer a year ago at 25.7 ppg, this is more than a one-woman team. Three starters return from the Missouri Valley Conference regular-season champs, who ranked third in the nation last year in 3-point percentage (.395).

21. Illinois Fighting Illini
1998-99 record: 19-12.
Key players: F Susan Blauser, sr., 6-2; F Tauja Catchings, sr., 6-1.
The skinny: Three starters return for coach Theresa Grentz, including last year's leading scorers, Susan Blauser (17.1 ppg) and Tauja Catchings (15.4 ppg, 8.8 rpg). Senior guard Melissa Parker opens things up with her 3-point shooting. The Fighting Illini are good, but they have to contend with a competitive Big Ten field.

22. Stanford Cardinal
1998-99 record: 18-12.
Key players: G Milena Flores, sr., 5-6; G Lindsey Yamasaki, so., 6-1; F Enjoli Izidor, so., 6-0.
The skinny: The Cardinal made a 12th straight NCAA Tournament appearance last year, but an 18-12 record is not a successful season at Stanford. With a roster that includes sophomore Lindsey Yamasaki, junior Carolyn Moos and senior Milena Flores, the Cardinal should make a lot more noise come March.

23. Tulane Green Wave
1998-99 record: 24-6.
Key players: G Grace Daley, sr., 5-8; G Britt Themann, fr., 6-1.
The skinny: Grace Daley, who averaged more than 24 points a game last year, is the main gun for the Green Wave, but she's hardly the only weapon. Two other starters -- junior Janell Burse, the Conference USA Defensive Player of the Year, and sophomore Sarah Goree -- also return.

24. St. Mary's (Calif.) Gaels
1998-99 record: 26-7.
Key players: F Tracy Morris, sr., 6-2.
The skinny: After making its initial NCAA Tournament appearance a year ago, Saint Mary's is ready to go back for more. In addition to West Coast Conference Player of the Year Tracy Morris, the Gaels also boast a talented set of twins in Jerkisha and Jermisha Dosty.

25. Virginia Cavaliers
1998-99 record: 20-9.
Key players: G Erin Stovall, jr., 5-9.
The skinny: Despite the losses of DeMya Walker and Monick Foote, the Cavaliers should be OK this year behind the play of senior guard Renee Robinson. Junior center Elena Kravchenko, at 6-10, is an imposing force in the pivot, but the Cavaliers will be hard-pressed to match last year's defensive efforts (63.8 ppg).

26. North Carolina State Wolfpack
1998-99 record: 17-12.
Key players: C Summer Erb, sr., 6-6; G Tynesha Lewis, jr., 5-10.
The skinny: With Summer Erb and Tynesha Lewis back in the fold, the Wolfpack should bounce back from last year's disappointing season, which saw them finish fifth in the ACC and fall in the second round of the conference tournament. Erb, at 6-6, is an offensive juggernaut (21.5 ppg, 9.9 rpg) who's tough to stop.

27. Florida Gators
1998-99 record: 19-14.
Key players: F Tonya Washington, sr., 6-0; G Brandi McCain, so., 5-3.
The skinny: All five starters return for the Gators, assuming sophomore guard Brandi McCain can recover from a torn anterior cruciate ligament she suffered in July. If not, more pressure will be placed on guard-forward Tiffany Travis (team-best 14.5 ppg and 4.2 rpg) to carry the team.

28. Utah Utes
1998-99 record: 21-7.
Key players: F Lori Red, sr., 5-11.
The skinny: For its first season in the new Mountain West Conference, Utah has all five starters back from last year's Western Athletic Conference champ. The Utes rely on their defense, which held teams to just 36 percent field goal shooting last year.

29. Marquette Golden Eagles
1998-99 record: 21-8.
Key players: F-C Abbie Willenborg, sr. 6-2; F Lisa Oldenburg, sr. 6-2.
The skinny: Two straight first-round losses in the NCAA Tournament are the motivating factor for five returning starters at Marquette. Senior forward-center Abbie Willenborg was the team's leading scorer (16.9 ppg) and rebounder (9.8 rpg), and she teams with senior forward Lisa Oldenburg (8.7 rpg) to comprise Conference USA's best inside tandem.

30. Santa Clara Broncos
1998-99 record: 22-7.
Key players: C Annie Garrison, jr., 6-3; G Stephanie Rogers, jr., 5-7; F Katie Pursley, sr., 6-1; G Becki Ashbaugh, so., 5-5; F Tammy Annas, so., 5-11; F Courtney Cushing, fr., 6-0.
The skinny: High-scoring Santa Clara is looking to its potent offense to push it onto the national scene. Leading scorer Annie Garrison (12.0 ppg, 7.7 rpg) leads a pack of four returning starters. Forward Katie Pursley is deadly from downtown, having hit 42 percent of her 3-point attempts in '98-99.

31. Old Dominion Lady Monarchs
1998-99 record: 28-4.
Key players: F-C Lucienne Berthieu, jr., 6-2; G Sharron Francis, so., 5-8.
The skinny: Even without Aubrey Eblin and Mery Andrade, the Lady Monarchs shouldn't be challenged in the Colonial Athletic Association. Especially if Lucienne Berthieu, who will take over the mantle of team leader, can shoot anything close to last year's 61.4 percent shooting performance.

32. Ohio State Buckeyes
1998-99 record: 17-11.
Key players: F Michaela Moua, sr., 6-0; G Jamie Lewis, jr., 5-4.
The skinny: Four starters are back for the young Buckeyes, but last year's leading scorer, Marrita Porter, isn't one of them. Sophomore guard Lauren Shenk is expected to help fill Porter's shoes on the offensive end. Junior Jamie Lewis, a two-year starter, will try to get back by midseason after having surgery in July to repair a torn ACL.

33. Wisconsin Badgers
1998-99 record: 18-14.
Key players: F LaTonya Sims, jr., 6-3; F Jessie Stomski, so., 6-3.
The skinny: The Badgers have high hopes for this season, considering they return all five starters from last year's fourth-place Big Ten squad and have added sensational freshman center Nina Smith.

34. Texas Tech Lady Raiders
1998-99 record: 30-4.
Key players: G Melinda Schmucker-Pharies, sr., 5-9; F Keitha Dickerson, sr., 6-0.
The skinny: Melinda Schmucker-Pharies will try to keep two-time Big 12 champ Texas Tech on course from the point guard position, while senior forward Keitha Dickerson (8.9 ppg, 7.7 rpg) will take on a bigger role in the offense.

35. Kansas Jayhawks
1998-99 record: 23-10.
Key players: F Lynn Pride, sr., 6-2; F Brooke Reves, jr., 6-0.
The skinny: Lynn Pride (17.1 ppg) joins four other junior starters for the Jayhawks, who advanced to the NCAA Tournament second round before falling to eventual champ Purdue.

36. Mississippi State Lady Bulldogs
1998-99 record: 17-11.
Key players: G-F Jennifer Fambrough, so., 6-0; G-F Nitra Perry, sr., 5-8.
The skinny: Four starters are back from the first Lady Bulldogs squad to advance to the NCAA Tournament. A return trip depends largely on sophomore Jennifer Fambrough, who averaged more than 17 points a game as a freshman.

37. Nebraska Cornhuskers
1998-99 record: 21-12.
Key players: G Nicole Kubik, sr., 5-10; G Brooke Schwartz, sr., 5-9.
The skinny: Guards Nicole Kubik (19.8 ppg) and Brooke Schwartz (13.2 ppg) are back to provide the offense, and center Charlie Rogers patrols the middle for the Huskers, who made the Big Dance despite an 8-8 Big 12 mark.

38. Colorado State Rams
1998-99 record: 33-3
Key players: F Heather Haanen, jr., 5-11.
The skinny: Three-time WAC MVP Becky Hammon is gone, but the Rams will be Tournament threats thanks to junior forward Heather Haanen (10.2 ppg).

39. Drake Bulldogs
1998-99 record: 21-10.
Key players: C Tammi Blackstone, sr., 6-5; F-C Haley Sames, sr., 6-4.
The skinny: All five starters, including twin towers Tammi Blackstone and Haley Sames, return as the Bulldogs look for their third straight NCAA Tournament appearance.

40. Rice Owls
1998-99 record: 20-12.
Key players: G Marla Brumfield, sr., 5-9; G-F Kim Smallwood, sr., 5-10; F Kirra Jordan, sr., 6-0.
The skinny: A second straight 20-win season wasn't enough to get the Owls to the Big Dance, but they should be there this year with the team's top three scorers from a year ago all returning.

41. Kentucky Lady Wildcats
1998-99 record: 21-11.
Key players: G-F Tiffany Wait, jr., 5-10; G Erica Jackson, jr., 5-6; F Laura Meadows, so., 6-2.
The skinny: The experienced backcourt of Tiffany Wait and Erica Jackson should help the Wildcats survive in the brutal SEC.

42. George Washington Colonials
1998-99 record: 19-9.
Key players: G Elisa Aguilar, sr., 5-8.; F Petra Dubovcova, jr., 6-3.
The skinny: Injuries hurt the Colonials last year, but with senior guard Elisa Aguilar returning, another 20-win season (GW has eight in the past nine seasons) is within reach.

43. Pepperdine Waves
1998-99 record: 21-9.
Key players: G Rasheeda Clark, jr., 5-10; G Jennifer Saari, so., 5-7.
The skinny: With three starters back, including leading scorer and emotional leader Rasheeda Clark, the Waves are confident they can reach the NCAA Tournament for the first time.

44. New Mexico Lobos
1998-99 record: 24-7.
Key players: F Miranda Sanchez, jr., 6-1.
The skinny: The Lobos will again be one of the harder teams to score on this year. They held opponents to 58.5 points a game and just 36.5 percent shooting from the field last season.

45. Arizona Wildcats
1998-99 record: 18-11.
Key players: F Angela Lackey, sr., 6-0; F Elizabeth Pickney, so., 6-4; G Felicity Willis, sr., 5-7.
The skinny: Coach Joan Bonvicini welcomes back her entire roster from last season, including All-Pac-10 selection Felecity Willis (12.1 ppg, 5.5 apg). With a potent offense, the Wildcats are hoping to break into the top three in the Pac-10.

46. Florida International Golden Panthers
1998-99 record: 23-7.
Key players: F-C Viktoria nagy, sr., 6-2.
The skinny: The Golden Panthers have lost some talent, but playing in the Sun Belt Conference should help FIU rack up enough wins to reach the Big Dance.

47. Stephen F. Austin Ladyjacks
1998-99 record: 17-12.
Key players: F Shawnta Johnson, sr., 5-11.
The skinny: A 13th straight NCAA Tournament appearance seems certain, but if the Ladyjacks are going to make some noise, they'll need Shawnta Johnson to improve her 14.1 ppg average.

48. Alabama Crimson Tide
1998-99 record: 20-11.
Key players: G Nicole Carruth, jr., 5-8.
The skinny: There are plenty of holes in the Tide's lineup, although sophomores Beth Vice, Shondra Johnson and LaNisha Cartwell should fill them just fine.

49. Louisville Lady Cardinals
1998-99 record: 21-11.
Key players: G Jill Morton, sr., 5-5; G Jenny Knight, sr., 5-6.
The skinny: The Cardinals' fortunes will be decided by their backcourt of Jill Morton (13.4 ppg) and Jenny Knight (6.3 apg).

50. Memphis Lady Tigers
1998-99 record: 22-10.
Key players: G Yolanda Reed, sr., 5-8.
The skinny: Memphis will be counting on senior guard Yolanda Reed (11.4 ppg, 5.2 rpg, 4.2 apg) to get it back to the NCAA Tournament after a year's absence.

51. Kent Golden Flashes
1998-99 record: 22-7.
Key players: G Dawn Zerman, sr., 5-7.
The skinny: While three players who averaged in double figures in scoring last year return, defense is the key for Kent, which forced more than 25 turnovers a game a year ago.

52. Tennessee Tech Golden Eaglettes
1998-99 record: 21-9.
Key players: C Janet Holt, so., 6-0; C Diane Seng, sr., 6-2.
The skinny: Four starters are back, including leading scorer Diane Seng (14.9 ppg), as the Golden Eaglettes look for a return to the NCAA Tournament.

53. Southern Methodist Mustangs
1998-99 record: 20-11.
Key players: F Karlin Kennedy, sr., 6-1.
The skinny: Karlin Kennedy, the WAC tournament MVP a year ago, is back to try to get the Mustangs to the Big Dance for the sixth time in seven years.

54. Texas Longhorns
1998-99 record: 16-12.
Key players: F Edwina Brown, sr. 5-10.
The skinny: With four starters back, coach Jody Conradt may have a team that can return Texas to its past glory.

55. Oral Roberts Golden Eagles
1998-99 record: 17-12.
Key players: G Krista Ragan, so., 5-7.
The skinny: A repeat of last year's 10-win improvement is a little far-fetched, but with three sophomore starters back, ORU should continue its ascent.

56. Kansas State Wildcats
1998-99 record: 16-14.
Key players: F Nicky Ramage, sr., 6-1.
The skinny: Everyone is back for the Wildcats, who struggled mightily last year but seem poised for a bounce-back season.

57. Maine Black Bears
1998-99 record: 24-7.
Key players: C Jamie Cassidy, sr., 6-4; F Martina Tinklova, jr., 6-4; G Kristen MCormick, sr., 5-10; G Amy Vachon, sr., 5-7.
The skinny: After a first-ever NCAA Tournament victory last year, the Black Bears are hoping for even more this year behind America East Player of the Year Jamie Cassidy.

58. St. Joseph's Hawks
1998-99 record: 23-8.
Key players: F Susan Moran, so., 6-1; G Angela Zampella, sr., 5-7.
The skinny: There's plenty of optimism for the Hawks, who upset Tulane in the NCAA Tournament last season and has three starters returning for the 1999-2000 campaign.

59. Xavier Musketeers
1998-99 record: 24-9.
Key players: F Jennifer Phillips, jr., 6-3; G-F Nicole Levandusky, jr., 5-9.
The skinny: Xavier gave UConn quite a scare in the second round last year, and the Musketeers will be plenty scary this season with so much firepower returning.

60. Grambling State Lady Tigers
1998-99 record: 25-5.
Key players: C Nakesha Jewell, jr., 6-2; G Natalie Thomas, so., 5-9.
The skinny: The losses of Termika Mitchell and Felisha James could spell the end to the Lady Tigers' 55-game homecourt winning streak.

61. Liberty Lady Flames
1998-99 record: 21-8.
Key players: F Elena Kisseleva, sr., 6-1; G Sharon Wilkerson, sr., 5-6.
The skinny: The Lady Flames should continue their winning tradition of late (71-16 in the past three seasons), although no one may notice since Liberty is a part of the Big South Conference.

62. St. Peter's Peahens
1998-99 record: 25-6.
Key players: G Lawanda Greene, sr., 5-8.
The skinny: The Peahens return leading scorer Lawanda Greene (12.2 ppg) as they look for a second straight trip to the Big Dance.

63. Cal State Northridge Matadors
1998-99 record: 21-8.
Key players: G Edniesha Curry, jr., 5-6.
The skinny: Everyone is back, including leading scorer Edniesha Curry (18.3 ppg) for a team that made its first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance last year.

64. Toledo Rockets
1998-99 record: 23-5.
Key players: C Jennifer Markwood, sr., 6-4.
The skinny: Toledo won't repeat its 23-5 record of a year ago, but the rest of the Mid-American Conference shouldn't overlook the Rockets.
