Green Power Purchase: In 2004, a referendum led by Students Promoting Environmental Action in Knoxville (S.P.E.A.K.) helped increase UT's green power purchase. Since that time, the university has become one of the leading green power purchasers among higher education institutions in the southeastern US. Through a pilot program with the Tennessee Valley Authority, UT will purchase more than 73,333 megawatt hours of third-party certified green power during 2012-13.
