Boxing's Heavyweight Championship Lineage
Jersey Joe Walcott
1951-52
Born Arnold Raymond Cream, Walcott was at the time the oldest fighter to win the heavyweight championship, at age 37. (George Foreman shattered the record at age 45 in 1994.) He finally won the belt, in his fourth try, against Charles in their third fight in 1951. He lost it little more than a year later, against Rocky Marciano.
Walcott retired from boxing after a second loss to Marciano in 1953 with a record of 51-18-2 (32 KOs) and went on to work in movies and politics. He also was the referee for the memorable but controversial championship fight between Muhammad Ali and Sonny Liston in 1965.
