Oct. 8, 1967 -- Cardinals 6, Red Sox 0: Bob Gibson missed almost two months during the 1967 regular season after taking a Roberto Clemente line drive off the right leg. Gibson's broken fibula healed in time for the World Series, and as Boston could attest, his right arm was in perfect working order.
Gibson raised the bar in the Series, throwing three straight complete games and posting a 3-0 record with a 1.00 ERA. The performance was a precursor to 1968 -- "The Year of the Pitcher" -- when Gibson's 1.12 ERA, Denny McLain's 31 victories and a host of other amazing pitching feats prompted Major League Baseball to lower the mound by five inches to give hitters a fighting chance.
