Kent Lawrence sprints to Cotton Bowl leadDec. 31, 1966: On the game's second play, Georgia running back Kent Lawrence took a handoff and ran 74 yards for a touchdown, giving the Bulldogs an early 7-0 lead over SMU in the 1966 Cotton Bowl. Lawrence ran for 149 yards on 16 carries in the Bulldogs' 24-9 victory over the Mustangs. A few weeks later, Lawrence beat Southern California's O.J. Simpson in the 60-yard dash at the NCAA indoor track and field championships.
