Reds activate Weathers, option Bray to minors

CINCINNATI -- Right-handed reliever David Weathers was activated off the 15-day disabled list Monday, giving the Cincinnati Reds their top setup man for the start of a series against the Chicago Cubs.

The Reds optioned left-handed reliever Bill Bray to Triple-A Louisville to open a roster spot.

Weathers felt a burning sensation near his right elbow when he threw a pitch in a game on April 19 against Milwaukee. A medical test detected an inflamed nerve, and he went on the disabled list the next day.

Bray was called up from Louisville a week ago and appeared in four games, including three in a row. He allowed one run in 8 2-3 innings, impressing the Reds with his performances.

Because he had pitched three days in a row and wouldn't have been available for the start of the three-game series against the Cubs, Bray was a logical choice to go back to the minors.

"He wasn't sent down because he wasn't pitching well," manager Dusty Baker said. "He did a great job for us."
