Morning Skate: The union speaks

On Monday night, the NHL Players' Association executive committee (which consists of 30 player representatives, one from each club) officially nominated Massachusetts lawyer Paul Kelly for the vacant executive director position. Now, the player reps will conduct a secret ballot vote. According to NHLPA spokesman Jonathan Weatherdon, the voting process will be completed before Oct. 23.

Barring something unforeseen, I expect Kelly to receive the full backing of the committee to succeed disgraced former executive director Ted Saskin, who was removed from the position in May after union membership learned he read players' e-mails without their knowledge.
