ARLINGTON, Texas -- Rangers starter Kason Gabbard left
Sunday night's game against Tampa Bay with a stiff left forearm
after throwing only one pitch in the second inning.
The Rangers said Gabbard is day to day. They acquired the rookie
left-hander July 31 in a trade that sent reliever Eric Gagne to the
Boston Red Sox.
After Delmon Young led off the second with a deep fly ball,
Gabbard took a moment on the mound and looked in to catcher Jarrod
Saltalamacchia, another Rangers newcomer who played a high school
season in Florida with Gabbard. Manager Ron Washington then went to
the mound with pitching coach Mark Connor and trainer Jamie Reed.
The coaches and Reed only talked to Gabbard, who handed the ball
to Washington and walked to the dugout.
Gabbard gave up a leadoff single to Jonny Gomes, then retired
his last four batters with two strikeouts. Gabbard threw 12 of his
18 pitches for strikes on a night when the gametime temperature was
98 degrees.
Gabbard is 1-1 for Texas after going 4-0 in seven starts for the
Red Sox.
