Suns broadcaster McCoy, sportswriter Moran named Gowdy Award winners

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. -- Al McCoy, the longtime Phoenix Suns
broadcaster, and Malcolm Moran, who spent three decades covering
college sports for four newspapers, will receive the 2007 Curt
Gowdy Media Awards from the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of
Fame.

The presentation will made during enshrinement festivities Sept.
6-8, the Hall of Fame announced Friday.

McCoy has been the play-by-play voice of the Suns since 1972.
His trademark calls include "Shazam," "zing go the strings" and
"heartbreak hotel."

The 2007-08 season will be McCoy's 36th with the Suns, the
longest tenure with one team among current broadcasters.

Moran, currently the inaugural Knight Chair in Sports Journalism
and Society at Penn State, covered 26 Final Fours, the 1984 and
1996 Olympics and the 2002 World Championships.

He began his newspaper career at Newsday in 1977 and went on to
work at The New York Times, Chicago Tribune and USA Today.

In addition to his current duties as the Knight Chair in Sports
Journalism, Moran also serves as the director of the John Curley
Center for Sports Journalism in the College of Communications at
Penn State, teaching courses in sports writing and news media
ethics.

Named in honor of the late sports broadcaster and former
Basketball Hall of Fame president, the Gowdy awards are given
annually to one member of the print and one member of the
electronic media whose efforts have made a significant contribution
to the game of basketball.
