College Football Traditions

Perhaps nothing sums up the mystique of the Miami dynasty in the 1980s and 1990s better than ... the smoke.

Players run through the tunnel onto the field as white smoke engulfs them, the sound of a hurricane blaring through the speakers. There was no more intimidating sight than seeing the Canes literally emerging from thin air, like ninjas ready for a fight.

But did you know the tradition was started in the 1950s as a way to increase fan interest? UM transportation director Bob Nalette decided fire extinguishers would be used to create the smoke.

Today, the smoke and the sound of a hurricane are all that is really needed to get everybody in Miami juiced up for a game. -- Andrea Adelson
