Report: Geno Auriemma's new UConn deal worth 5 years, $13M

Women's College Basketball, Connecticut Huskies

Geno Auriemma's new five-year agreement with Connecticut pays the women's basketball coach at least $13 million, according to records obtained by USA Today.

The deal, signed in October and obtained by the newspaper this week in response to an open-records request, increases what probably had been the highest-paying contract in women's college sports. The new contract replaces the one that had been set to expire in April 2018.

Auriemma has guided the Huskies to 11 NCAA titles, including the past four, and is currently riding a 100-game winning streak.

The new agreement bumps Auriemma's basic compensation to $2.4 million this season. A notable enhancement in the deal is a $400,000 a-year salaried position within the school's athletics department should he resign or retire in good standing after the 2020-21 season.

The amount Auriemma receives if the university fired him without cause increased, and he no longer would have an obligation to seek another job and income that would at least partially offset the amount he'd received.

The amount Auriemma would owe the school for taking another coaching job increases $5 million and drops by $500,000 each year.
