Team Canada adds O'Reilly to replace injured Seguin

NEW YORK -- Team Canada replaced injured forward Tyler Seguin with Ryan O'Reilly on Tuesday, adding the Buffalo Sabres center to its roster for the World Cup of Hockey.

O'Reilly had 21 goals and 39 assists in 71 games last season. He won the Lady Byng Trophy for the 2013-14 season while with Colorado and has at least 50 points in four of the past five seasons.

Seguin played in Canada's first two pre-tournament games against Team USA, getting an assist in a 5-2 win Saturday. Hockey Canada did not specify Seguin's injury.

"Any time your country calls, it's a great honor and is something every kid from Canada dreams about getting the chance to do," Seguin said in a statement put out by the Dallas Stars, his NHL team. "While I'm upset that I don't get the opportunity to play, I understand the situation Team Canada is in with a short tournament."

Stars general manager Jim Nill said Seguin will return to Dallas "in the coming days" and the team will evaluate him when he arrives.

Canada plays its first World Cup game on Saturday against the Czech Republic.
