Hayden Stone has surgery

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Vanderbilt pitcher Hayden Stone, the winning pitcher as the Commodores clinched the national championship last June, has had season-ending Tommy John surgery.

Stone wrote on Twitter that he was having the surgery in Pensacola, Florida, on Thursday, and he posted an update Thursday afternoon that the surgery was successful.

A first-team preseason All-Southeastern Conference pick, Stone had not pitched since Feb. 24. The sophomore right-hander was 1-2 with a 9.64 ERA in three appearances this season. He was 4-0 with a 1.71 ERA and three saves last season, and he finished off Vanderbilt's 3-2 win over Virginia for the national title last summer.

The Tennessean first reported the surgery.

The top-ranked Commodores are 24-6, 7-2 in SEC play, with a series at Georgia this weekend.
