Boyd wins third WSOP bracelet

Poker

Dutch Boyd shined on the public stage from the moment the WSOP began to gain steam in 2003. Stories were told about "The Crew" and his excelling in school at such a young age, but when the cameras turned off, and the spotlight and tour left Las Vegas, Boyd faced a number of troubles, now publicly documented in his book Poker Tilt. The book takes readers through the highs and lows of Boyd's life and his constant struggle to keep a bankroll and a focused lifestyle. It focuses on failures in business ventures well known within poker circles and successes on the felt that came right at the perfect moment.

Tuesday's final table in the $1,000 no-limit hold 'em event was another one of those perfect moments. Boyd captured WSOP gold for the third time in his career and earned $288,744, the second-largest tournament win of his career.

"I think deep struggle makes you appreciate the moments more," Boyd said "It's easier to focus on the present when the past has been a little dark. It's also easier to shake off the bad beats and be glad I'm sitting where I'm at."

This was Boyd's fourth cash of the 2014 Series and ninth since 2012. His last victory came in 2010 in a six-handed limit hold 'em event. He became the fifth player in 2014 to earn their third WSOP bracelet.

"It's not like this win is going to change my life, or anything," he said to the WSOP. "It's not life-changing money for me, but it's good to come here in the summer and prove to everyone over and over that you're a relevant player again. Three bracelets is a pretty big accomplishment. There really is a difference between one and two, and two and three."

Boyd entered the final table second in chips and with all the experience on his side. Despite a number of players with significant WSOP experience, no member of his competition had won WSOP gold before. As expected in a $1,000 buy-in field, a few of them were just savoring the opportunity to make a name for themselves.

After Chad Dixon's elimination in ninth, two of the more seasoned rounders, Vinny Pahuja and Gabriel Nassif, clashed in one of the most entertaining hands of the night. The chips went in before the flop with Pahuja dominating with A-Q against Nassif's Q-J. The flop A-Q-J gave both two pair and the turn J put Nassif in the lead. As broadcast on WSOP.com, Pahuja, who looked relatively devastated with the situation, felt the complete roller coaster of emotions when an ace hit the river. Nassif, eliminated in eighth, has 26 career WSOP cashes and five final tables.

Boyd eliminated Pahuja next to bolster his lead and coasted for the majority of the final table. With three remaining, it was Boyd and Paul Cogliano battling for first and Steven Norden trailing. Cogliano seized control and was one card away from eliminating Boyd, but a 7 on the river saved the latter's tournament (A-7 > A-K). The chip lead changed hands a number of times until Boyd was finally able to eliminate Cogliano. Heads-up lasted only 15 hands and Boyd won 12 of them, including the most important one of all. On the final hand, Boyd, holding two pair, caught Norden making a move on the river with air. He called his opponent's ill-timed all-in and had outlasted the field of 1,688 to become a champion once again.

This sounds like a pretty good start to his next book.

Other notable finishers included Faraz Jaka (11th), Dan Kelly (22nd), Todd Terry (41st) and Matt Glantz (71st).
