High-stakes pro Polk wins turbo event

Poker

Doug Polk sat at his table during the $1,000 buy-in turbo event with a chart in his hands. The chart provided him with the right pushing range given the rapidly increasing blind structure, and as his opponents laughed at his utilization, he strategically navigated through the field and ultimately won his first WSOP bracelet.

Polk began playing poker at the microstakes where swings of dollars resulted in lessons learned. These days, playing online at the highest stakes in the world, a six-figure swing is commonplace. Nobody questions that he's put in his time or is shocked to see him posing behind a stack of chips with a bracelet in his hands.

"[The bracelet] means a lot," he said to the WSOP. "I just think it gives me a more solid foundation to build on my position within the industry."

That position, which has always revolved around his online play, is changing as we speak. Polk will enter the $1 million Big One for One Drop in a few weeks, a tournament which he feels will provide a challenge and a different atmosphere than what is found each day at the Rio.

"I'm tired of being WCGrider," he said of his online moniker. "I want to be Doug Polk. I want to get out there and I want to try to establish myself in poker. My goals long term are to get a sponsor and to work with other people in the industry and I need to not be, hiding behind a computer screen, to do that."

Polk earned $251,969 for the victory, but potentially more in bracelet bets with his roommates and according to this video on Bluff, Phil Ivey. He defeated Andy Philachack heads-up for the title. This was Philachack's second runner-up finish on the WSOP felt. He also has a third-place finish in 2011.

Anthony Gregg, winner of last year's $111,111 event, finished sixth. The WSOP and WPT champion is approaching $10 million in live tournament earnings.

Other notable finishers include Amanda Baker (10th), Joe Kuether (17th) and Ty Reiman (24th).
