Nitsche youngest to three bracelets

Poker

Final tables of $1,000 events at the World Series of Poker typically feature eight players who have yet to leave their mark on the industry and one player who has some recognition. That final table composition couldn't have been further from what was seen in Event 21, where Dominik Nitsche became the youngest three-time WSOP champion in history. The 23-year-old professional poker player from Germany began his career online, but his live game has thrived since the moment he collect his first cash in 2009, when he won the $5,000 buy-in LAPT main event in Mar del Plata. He earned his first bracelet in 2012 (in another $1,000 event) and his second just a few weeks ago in the WSOP's National Championship. Now he's become the fourth player in this year's WSOP to earn his third bracelet, and he's got a great demeanor that could make him the next worldwide poker star.

"It's feels really good to win this one," said Nitsche to the WSOP. "Of course, the first one feels really great, and so does the second one, and so does the third. They all feel good in different ways because this is the top prize on poker. This is what we play for."

Nitsche's recenty success has him thinking big and has placed a target the all-time bracelet leader.

"I have been playing poker for seven years," he said. "At this rate, I really think I can catch Hellmuth. Of course, he and Phil Ivey are great players so to be talked in the same breath as them is really something for me. I will just say I am really proud to come to Las Vegas where I have enjoyed a lot of success over the years."

Earning this victory required defeating a 292-hand final table that included 2011 November Niner Bob Bounahra, Thayer Rasmussen, Jeff Gross and Dave D'Alesandro. Rasmussen, better known online as "THAY3R", began the final table with the lead, but it was Gross who moved first, eliminating David Burt in ninth. Next, Billy Horan and Eric Milas followed him out the door at the hands of D'Alesandro.

With six remaining, and five poker-household names in the mix, it was Belize's Bounahra in command, and the chips continued fly. Nitsche made his move at this point, knocking out Gross (Q-Q over A-K) in sixth, Rasmussen (10-10 over A-K) in fifth, and 2009 Aussie Million main event final tablist Zachary Gruneberg in fourth. D'Alesandro knocked out Bounahra in third (Q-Q over 7-7) and earned a 2.5-to-1 chip lead entering heads-up play.

The industry often talks about the skills and patience that bring a player to the bracelet, but on this night, Nitche can credit one hand and one card: the 10 of clubs. Nitsche was all-in and behind D'Alesandro's A-Q with 9-10 and rivered that 10 of clubs to double up. That hand began his comeback and a steady grind back to the lead and eventually the bracelet.

This was D'Alesandro's first WSOP final table. He finished 62nd in the 2012 WSOP main event and plays under the handle "doubledave22" online where he has $1.9 million in lifetime earnings.

Other notable finishers include Mickey Petersen (14th), Timothy Adams (18th) and Jason Senti (21st).
