Gillis shocks the 'World' in Event 19

Poker

On one side of the table sat one of the most decorated players in the game. On the other side sat a retired Marine sergeant playing at his first WSOP final table. Ted Gillis had the edge in chips, but John "World" Hennigan had the experience. One would expect that the pro would easily be able to come back, but on any given day in poker, anything can happen. On Monday night, Gillis defeated Hennigan heads-up to win his first WSOP bracelet and $514,027.

The Texas amateur plays locally in bar leagues and credited his brother for his enthusiasm in the game. With over $10,000 in career earnings, he got just a little compensation for his efforts, but a dream came true in Las Vegas.

"It means a lot," said Gillis to the WSOP. "Kind of made a mark in history."

Not only did he make history by defeating the field of 2,086, but the way he reached that point is a story in itself. The final day began with 12 players and a third-place stack for Gillis. He lost half his stack by the time 10 remained and fell to the bottom of the pack. Luck turned his way right when things looked the bleakest. Facing Hiren Patel, who made his third final table in this event, he cracked aces by making a river flush with Kd-8d. Then he hit a river broadway straight with A-10 against Darin Stout's A-K. Gillis had moved up to third with seven remaining, but was back on the short stack when there were only five.

Gillis started to push and become aggressive, needing a double up, The call never came, but in the process he chipped up back into contention. Hennigan eliminated Jacobo Fernandez in fourth, and Gillis took care of Dejan Divkovic in third to force heads-up. The momentum shifted from the pro to the amateur on the 16th hand, as Gillis flopped bottom set and was paid off after filling up on the river. Down to 15 big blinds, Hennigan couldn't recover and ultimately pushed all in with Q-9 against Gillis' A-6. Gillis flopped an ace and earned his spot in poker history.

Other notable finishers include Phil Collins (16th), Bryan Micon (25th) and Loni Harwood (29th).
