Danzer finally gets his WSOP win

Poker

During his winner's interview after taking down Event 3 of the 2014 World Series of Poker, Brandon Shack-Harris said that his sights were set on the $10,000 razz championship where he felt he had an edge. As the razz event came to a close, and 110 out of the record-setting 112 players had been eliminated, Shack-Harris kept focused on that second bracelet of the Series. However, the obstacle known as George Danzer stood in his way. The 30-year-old German superstar held a slight edge in the chip counts to begin heads-up play and managed to fend off Shack-Harris' attack throughout their 90-minute battle to earn his first WSOP title.

"It's everything," he said to the WSOP about his victory. "For 10 years now, since I was 21, I always wanted to come to the World Series and be a world champion. I was always watching the news to see who won, and I wanted to be like them. I come over every year, and it's my 10th year now. When you get close, you get a taste of it, and I came close a couple of times. I'm really, really happy now."

Those comments don't quite represent do Danzer justice in terms of explain how close he's been in the past to WSOP gold. Out of Danzer's 10 WSOP-related cashes, this was his eighth final table. He's finished third and fifth in the 2-7 draw events, fifth in the $50,000 Players Championship in 2013, and runner-up in the split Omaha/seven-card stud high-low event in 2012. The waiting finally came to an end on Sunday night.

Danzer is a high-volume online player who has won four Spring Championship of Online Poker titles, including one last month. He is currently third in the WSOP Player of the year race, trailing Justin Bonomo and Shack-Harris.

The final table included four previous WSOP bracelet winners including David Bach, who finished fifth in the $1,500 razz event last week. Yuval Bronshtein finished fourth in his sixth WSOP final table appearance.
