Cartwright tops 2,223 in Event 4

The first few days of the WSOP was complete with three significant events: Vanessa Selbst winning her first bracelet, the first $1,000 pot-limit Omaha field setting a WSOP record and the no-limit masses returning to the Rio. The $1,000 buy-in Event 4 featured a field of 2,223 and served as a warm-up for many participating in the Millionaire Maker. Kyle Cartwright was happy to see the large field and it's something he's accustomed to seeing stop after stop on the WSOP Circuit. The five-time Circuit champion added a bracelet to his collection, along with $360,278, as he became the Event 4 champion.

"Winning this means a lot to me," Cartwright said to the WSOP. "Winning a gold bracelet has been my whole life's dream, and now finally it's come true. I'm excited and happy, so I'm going to head out and party. It's going to be a fun night."

Cartwright entered the final table as the chip leader and for the most part, dominated it. Ylon Schwartz chipped up as the table was reduced to only six, but Cartwright found the padding he needed as he won a major flip against Jeremy Dresch holding Q-Q to Dresch's A-K. The board ran clean and gave Cartwright a stack of 3.8 million in chips, 2.5 million more than Schwartz in second. Matthew O'Donnell fell in fifth to a Cartwright flopped-straight, then Schwartz knocked out Daniel Dizenzo in fourth.

Schwartz momentarily seized the chip lead from Cartwright, while Jason Paster survived and watched the two giants constantly battle. On the hand before the dinner break, Cartwright and Schwartz tangled in a four million-chip pot that resulted in the former November Niner's elimination. Paster opened from the button, Cartwright three-bet to 260,000 and Schwartz moved all-in for two million. Paster quickly folded as Cartwright thought, and eventually called with 9-9, which dominated Schwartz's 4-4. The board ran clean for Cartwright, and Schwartz earned $157,926 for his third-place result. Schwartz, who won his first bracelet in 2012, also finished seventh in the 2014 WSOP National Championship.

The heads-up match lasted only nine hands and ended with another victorious coin flip for Cartwright (A-Q > 4-4).

Other notable finishers include Jeff Gross (13th), Russell Thomas (42nd), Andrew Lichtenberger (46th) and Phil Collins (49th).
