Bjorkman-Woodbridge win first Wimbledon title

WIMBLEDON, England -- Jonas Bjorkman and Todd Woodbridge won their first Wimbledon doubles title together, beating Mark Knowles and Daniel Nestor 6-1, 6-2, 6-7 (7), 7-5 in Sunday's final.

It was the second Grand Slam title for Bjorkman and Woodbridge, adding to their win at the 2001 Australian Open.

Woodbridge, who claimed his 73rd career doubles title and was playing in his 17th Grand Slam final, also won 11 previous Grand Slams with fellow Australian Mark Woodforde, including six Wimbledons.

Knowles, of the Bahamas, and Nestor, a Canadian, were playing in their 93rd tournament together since teaming up in 1994. They've won the Australian Open doubles title.

Bjorkman, a Swede, and Woodbridge gained an early advantage and led 2-0 when Nestor double-faulted on break point in the second game. Woodbridge then had to fight off two break points in the next game, before the Swedish-Australian combo got a second break to lead 5-1. Woodbridge served out the set at love.

Bjorkman and Woodbridge also took early control of the second set, winning 12 straight points at one stage. A Woodbridge forehand volley gave them a break to lead 2-1. Immediately after a 15-minute rain break at 3-1, Nestor again double-faulted on break point and that was enough to decide the second set.

There was another 30-minute rain break, with Knowles and Nestor leading 3-2 on serve in the third set. When play resumed, games continued to go with serve until 5-4, when Knowles and Nestor held a set point which was saved with a Bjorkman backhand volley.

In the tiebreaker, Knowles and Nestor held a second set point at 6-5, and although Bjorkman saved it with a winning return, they eventually took the tiebreaker on their fourth set point.

In the fourth set, Bjorkman saved a break point at 3-3, and Bjorkman and Woodbridge earned a match point at 5-4 on a ball that appeared to land long. Despite protests, the point stood. But Woodbridge netted a backhand on the next point.

At 6-5, Bjorkman and Woodbridge earned three more match points. They finally claimed their third title of the year when Knowles netted a backhand volley.
