Roddick's confidence at new level By Patrick McEnroe Special to ESPN.com MELBOURNE, Australia -- Overall this was a huge step for Andy Roddick. At the end of this tournament, he'll be No. 5 in the world. He's made a significant jump in the rankings and a significant belief in his game, composure and his ability to adjust in a match.
He's coming to net a bit more -- not always at the right time -- but he's realizing he needs to do that a bit more. He's doing a little more serving and volleying. His two milestone wins -- back-to-back -- were testament to his courage and his ability to play under pressure. I can't help but think that's just going to pay off for him down the road. When he gets on the plane tomorrow to go home his confidence in himself as a player is at a different level. Jim Courier and I were just talking to him in the locker room and told him all that, and he said, "I definitely feel I'm walking out of here with a lot more confidence." This loss in the semifinals to Rainer Schuettler wasn't easy. To be honest, the only way he lost was because he wasn't a 100 percent physically. But as difficult as it was to lose -- he told us, "God it would have been great to be playing Andre in the final"-- he realizes this was a great two weeks for him. Roddick's always been under pressure. He's lived with the pressure of being the next great American. He's lived with the pressure of not doing well at the majors last year despite being in the top 10. This won't give him more pressure, it's going to do the opposite. If he hadn't done well in Melbourne, the questions of "What's wrong with Roddick in the majors" would have continued. Now, no one can question his gut and ability to play well in the majors.
