Doubles specialist Bjorkman advances Associated Press MELBOURNE, Australia -- Jonas Bjorkman won a key point with a spectacular return of a smash and advanced to the Australian Open quarterfinals by beating No. 6 Tim Henman on Sunday.
Bjorkman converted his fifth match point with a forehand crosscourt passing shot, and went on to win 6-2, 7-6 (6), 6-4. The Swede, who was ranked as high as No. 4 in 1997, broke serve three times in the first set against Henman.
The five top-seeded men were gone before the third round, and Henman's departure left only No. 7 Tommy Haas, No. 8 Pete Sampras and No. 9 Marat Safin in the top 10.
Bjorkman suffered his only break in the second set's eighth game, broke back when Henman was serving for the set, and then faced a set point at 6-5 in the tiebreaker. On the run against Henman's volleying, he saved that with a forehand crosscourt pass and then hit his dazzling winner.
Henman looked sure to gain another set point with an overhead smash, but Bjorkman leaped and sent a forehand to the sideline. Henman netted a backhand serve return to end the set.
"I took a chance," Bjorkman said. "It's not often you make a point like that -- I guess it's good timing."
Henman saved four match points in the final game, but failed again to reach a quarterfinal at a Grand Slam event outside Wimbledon, where he has been a semifinalist three times.
"I felt really good in the beginning. I was hitting the ball clean. No matter what Tim did, I felt good hitting the ball," said Bjorkman, who is 5-2 record against the British player.
Bjorkman, in his first Grand Slam event quarterfinal since the Australian and U.S. Opens in 1998, next plays the winner between fellow Swede Thomas Johansson, seeded 16th, and Adrian Voinea.
"I think I was probably a bit nervous to begin with," Henman said. "There was probably a bit of tension in my serve."
Henman went in Sunday with an eight-match winning streak in 2002, and "I certainly had high expectations for myself."
"I'd given myself an opportunity. I've lost three years in a row at the fourth round and that doesn't sit well," he added.
In other men's action, No. 25 Jiri Novak beat Dominik Hrbaty 6-4, 6-2, 5-7, 6-2 and will next play Stefan Koubek, a 7-5, 6-1, 6-7 (3), 6-2 winner over Fernando Gonzalez. Also, 16th-seeded Thomas Johansson toppled Adrian Voinea 6-7 (10), 6-2, 6-0, 6-4. |
