Coker runs his way into the record book

The numbers: 391. Five. Four.

Those are the numbers that solidified DeMatha's Marcus Coker as MDVarsity.com State Player of the Week for Week 2.

The 6-foot-1, 220-pound running back rushed for 391 yards and five touchdowns against the state's No. 4 team, Gilman (2-1).

"I gave it my all on every play, and my line did a great job and the wide receivers blocking down field sprung me for the touchdowns," the 6-foot-1, 220-pound Coker said. "I was seeing huge gaps - just open field. That's all I saw."

Coker's impressive rushing performance set a school record and moved him into the state record books. His final carry of the game, a 9-yard run, catapulted him past Jason Boyd (383) and Jeff Smiley (384), placing him fourth all-time in the state.

The Maryland record holder for most rushing yards in a game is Sam Hess of Hancock, who rushed for 446 yards against St. James in 1998.

"I've been at DeMatha for 28 years and I've never seen a back have the kind of game he had," McGregor said of Coker. "He fits into the mold of some of the great ones we've had in the past. He's going to be another outstanding tailback for us."

Coker had touchdown runs of 80, 78, 4, 3 and 2 yards -- all but one touchdown was run over the left side of DeMatha's offensive line that boasts future Division I-A athletes Arie Kouandjio and Shane Johnson, who are both 6-foot-5 and 295 pounds.

Coker now has 564 rushing yards on the season to go along with six touchdowns.

DeMatha (2-0) is ranked No. 1 in the MDVarsity.com Maryland High School Football State Media Poll.
