Pretty much the last place anyone wants to be now is downtown Detroit, right? Wrong! Coming off a season in which they set a single-season franchise attendance record (3,202,645), the Tigers are averaging 28,418 fans per game at Comerica Park, first in the AL Central (and sixth in the AL overall). What keeps them coming? How about savvy initiatives such as $5 game tickets, value meals and parking. Fans can also turn a double play worthy of Trammell and Whitaker by snagging two Upper Box seats for $39 or two in the Lower Outfield Box sections for $49. The Tigers have more than twice as many free promotional giveaways this season -- our personal fave is Miguel Cabrera Growth Chart Day (Aug. 9) -- and they're stepping up community efforts such as Play Baseball Detroit!, which has reignited interest in the game for nearly 6,000 inner-city kids. Still, reminders of the dire economy linger. In early June, the city voted to knock down the remaining bit of old Tiger Stadium (the team moved to Comerica in 1999). As user mrlmichael wrote on MotownSports.com in response: "When they do take the rest down it's going to feel so weird pulling down Trumbull Ave and seeing just another empty space in Detroit. So sad." Over at Comerica, fans and their team are writing a happier ending.
