Lyttle's double-double paces Dream past Sun

UNCASVILLE, Conn. -- Sancho Lyttle had 20 points and 15 rebounds to lead the Atlanta Dream to a 67-62 victory over the Connecticut Sun on Sunday.

Chamique Holdsclaw scored 12 points and Erika DeSouza added 10 for the Dream (2-2).

Lyttle, making her first start of the season, shot 7 for 11 from the field.

"I just wanted to come out and do what I needed to do and that was good and coach kept me in the game," Lyttle said.

Lindsay Whalen had 16 points, seven rebounds and five assists for Connecticut (1-2), and Erin Phillips added 11 points.

The Dream, who shot 47 percent (27 for 58) from the field, held Connecticut to 29-percent (20 for 69). The Sun missed 19 of their first 22 shots and trailed by as many as nine in the first half.

"We missed 49 shots," Connecticut coach Mike Thibault said. "My biggest disappointment is the offense and for about three or four minutes in each half, not following the game plan."

After Holdsclaw's jumper gave the Dream a 59-52 lead with just under 4 minutes remaining, the Sun had a 10-4 run to pull within a point. Phillips had four points during the run and her layup with 20 seconds left brought Connecticut to 63-62.

Coco Miller made two free throws with 13.7 seconds left to give the Dream a three-point lead. Connecticut's Barbara Turner missed a 3-point attempt and Phillips missed a layup in the closing seconds as the Sun dropped to 0-2 at home.

"We are just not making shots," Turner said. "We're not turning the ball over a whole lot. We had 13 turnovers tonight. It just comes down to taking and making shots with confidence. That's all it is right now."

Lyttle closed the game with two free throws with 0.2 seconds to go, giving her eight points in the fourth quarter.

"She's been getting better and better," Atlanta coach Marynell Meadors said. "This was a breakthrough game for her."

Angel McCoughtry's running jumper gave Atlanta a 26-18 lead midway through the second quarter.

However, the Sun closed the half with a 12-0 run, capped by two free throws by Phillips in the final minute, to take a four-point lead at the break.

The Dream opened the third quarter with a 19-6 run, taking a 45-36 lead on Lyttle's jumper with 3:22 remaining.

"I thought she was the difference in the game," Thibault said.
