5 pitchers among 8 cuts by Baltimore Orioles

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. -- John Parrish and Brad Hennessey, minor league invitees who were competing for spots in the starting rotation before getting hurt, were among eight cuts made by the Baltimore Orioles on Wednesday.

Parrish will return to Baltimore this week to undergo diagnostic arthroscopic left shoulder surgery to determine the cause of soreness. Hennessey injured his right elbow in the Orioles' Grapefruit League opener and hasn't appeared in an exhibition game since.

Both were reassigned to the team's minor league camp in Sarasota along with infielders Donnie Murphy and Justin Turner, and outfielder Justin Christian.

Turner, acquired from Cincinnati with outfielder Ryan Freel in a deal for catcher Ramon Hernandez last winter, was a surprise in camp, hitting .375 with three home runs. He also was tied for the team lead with 10 RBIs. Turner has never played above Double-A.

The Orioles also optioned three pitchers to Triple-A Norfolk: right-handers Bob McCrory and Kam Mickolio, and left-hander Chris Waters.

The moves leave Baltimore with 40 players in camp.
